EMBRACING YOUR GOD-GIVEN PORTION
(Inspired by “My Portion” performed by Jekalyn Carr)
The song “My Portion” by Jekalyn Carr powerfully proclaims that the promises of God define the believer’s true inheritance. While the world often tries to label lives with failure, loss, or despair, the message of the gospel replaces those false verdicts with God’s unchanging truth. His Word declares that good health, abundance, restoration, and mercy are portions of His children in Christ.
Throughout Scripture, the language of portion signifies more than material blessing. Psalm 73:26 declares, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” To claim God as portion is to confess that He Himself is the greatest treasure, and everything else—healing, provision, and victory—flows out of His presence and promises.
Carr’s lyrics echo the call to actively embrace the promises of God: “I have to embrace the promise.” Faith is not passive but participatory. Believers are called to reject the enemy’s lies and to remind themselves daily of the truth that God’s promises are still yes and amen in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). To embrace the promise is to stand in confidence that God’s Word defines reality more than circumstances or emotions ever could.
This song is also a reminder that trials do not nullify the believer’s portion. Seasons of pain, loss, or uncertainty may arise, but the inheritance secured in Christ does not fade. Grace and mercy remain steady, doors open in His timing, and restoration belongs to His people. Choosing to declare “that’s my portion” shifts hearts from despair to hope, from fear to faith, and from defeat to worship.
