(Inspired by “Smile” performed by Sidewalk Prophets)
Sidewalk Prophets’ song “Smile” calls believers to an attitude the world cannot steal—joy rooted in Christ. The lyrics remind us that happiness comes and goes, but joy remains because it’s anchored in truth, not circumstance. “There’s always a reason to always choose joy,” the song declares, pointing to the deeper peace only found in the presence of God. When storms threaten to steal hope, joy becomes an act of faith—choosing to see beyond the moment to the eternal goodness of God.
Philippians 4:4 commands, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Paul wrote those words from prison, showing that joy has nothing to do with comfort and everything to do with Christ. For believers, rejoicing isn’t denial—it’s declaration. It proclaims that God’s promises outlast pain and that His purposes are still unfolding, even when the clouds gather. The choice to smile, praise, or dance in difficulty is a reflection of confidence in a faithful Savior who turns mourning into dancing and despair into hope.
In a culture quick to complain, joy stands out as a testimony of grace. When Christians reflect peace amid pressure, others take notice. Each smile becomes a quiet witness that God’s goodness runs deeper than hardship. “Smile, there’s a bigger plan,” the song says—and that bigger plan is redemption. Every moment surrendered to Christ becomes a reason to rejoice, even when the reason isn’t yet visible.
