Teach Me to Obey

TEACH ME TO OBEY
(Inspired by “Teach Me to Obey” performed by Bria Jean)

The lyrics of “Teach Me to Obey” are a humble prayer of surrender: “Not my will but Yours be done.” This echoes the words of Jesus in Gethsemane, when He submitted fully to the Father’s plan, even though it meant the cross. The song becomes a reminder that true discipleship is not about convenience but about obedience rooted in trust.

In daily life, obedience can be difficult. Desires compete with God’s direction, and human weakness often pulls believers toward compromise. Yet Scripture calls Christians to trust that God’s commands are always for their good. Obedience is not restrictive; it is freeing, because it aligns hearts with the wisdom and love of the Creator.

Deuteronomy 5:33 gives this encouragement: “Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.” Obedience is directly connected to life and blessing, not because it earns God’s favor but because it keeps His people in step with His purposes.

Obedience also requires dependence on God’s Spirit. No believer can follow Christ perfectly in their own strength. But when they surrender in prayer and lean on the Spirit’s guidance, God supplies both the desire and the power to obey.

“Teach Me to Obey” becomes both a plea and a declaration. It is the acknowledgment that apart from God, obedience is impossible, but with Him, it is the pathway to life, joy, and peace.
