WHAT FREEDOM FEELS LIKE
(Inspired by “What Freedom Feels Like” performed by Cody Carnes)
When Cody Carnes sings, “This is what freedom feels like,” the joy is contagious. His lyrics capture the radical transformation that happens when Christ’s light breaks into darkness and grace washes away the past. In Jesus, freedom is not a concept—it’s an experience of the soul set free to worship without fear, shame, or condemnation.
Many people live bound by invisible chains: guilt, addiction, performance, or self-reliance. Yet the gospel announces a freedom far deeper than worldly liberty. Christ’s freedom doesn’t erase all struggles, but it changes their power over us. Through His death and resurrection, the burden of sin was broken and the penalty paid in full. We no longer strive to earn approval—we live from the approval already secured by the cross.
The Bible speaks of this freedom as life in the Spirit. In Galatians 5, Paul declares that it was for freedom Christ set believers free. This isn’t permission to do whatever feels right; it’s the invitation to walk in holiness without fear. True freedom is living within God’s will, released from sin’s control, and empowered by grace to choose righteousness.
When believers “dance in His light,” as the song says, they display what freedom truly looks like: joy that defies circumstances, worship that rises from gratitude, and peace rooted in Christ’s victory. The chains that once defined life become testimonies to God’s power to redeem. Freedom isn’t found in escape—it’s found in surrender to Jesus, where our souls breathe for the first time.
