Paranoia

FREEDOM FROM FEAR
(Inspired by “Paranoia” performed by Tenth Avenue North)

Tenth Avenue North’s “Paranoia” delivers a timely challenge to followers of Christ living in an anxious and divided world. The lyrics expose how fear can twist perception, creating enemies where there should be neighbors. Paranoia—the suspicion that others are out to harm or oppose us—is a symptom of a deeper spiritual sickness: forgetting that every person is made in the image of God. When fear dictates our view of others, love grows cold, and unity within the body of Christ suffers.

Jesus confronted this same spirit in His time. The religious leaders feared losing control, the disciples feared persecution, and the crowds feared outsiders. But Jesus dismantled every wall with truth and compassion. He touched lepers, spoke with Samaritans, and welcomed sinners. His example reminds believers that suspicion and division are not fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, and self-control are. When the church trades compassion for paranoia, it abandons the power that makes it different from the world.

Scripture calls believers to a higher perspective: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Christ’s victory frees hearts from the captivity of fear. Instead of retreating from those who think differently, followers of Jesus are called to engage with humility and grace. The antidote to paranoia is presence—the presence of God that fills hearts with peace and overflows into love for others. As believers choose to see people through the lens of the gospel, fear fades and faith takes its rightful place.

PRAYER
Lord, calm the noise of fear within me and fill me with Your perfect love. Help me to see others as You do and to walk in unity and peace that reflects Your heart.

APPLICATION
When you feel fear or suspicion toward someone, stop and pray for them. Ask God to replace judgment with compassion and to remind you that His love unites, not divides.
